Goldfish and Aquarium Board Articles
Filter Profiles: Penguin 100
By JBC

Type: Hang-on-the-back (HOB) filter
Manufacturer: Marineland
Types of filtration possible: Mechanical, Biological and Chemical
GPH: 100
Tank Size: up to 20 gallons for tropical fish. Not good to be used independently for goldfish or turtles
Pros: Excellent biological filtration in the form of a Bio-Wheel which provides a large area for biofilter bacteria to grow on. Assembly of the filter is very easy, with easy instructions
Cons: Filter can produce a large amount of noise. Intake strainer can become clogged very easily from floating plants. Impellor motor can overheat from a power failure. The carbon cannot be removed from the filter easily.

These are a good choice for filters. They incorporate all three properties that good filters should include: Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological Filtration. Mechanical filtration is in the form of a blue Polyfiber pad, Chemcial filtration is in the form of active carbon, and Biological filtration is in the form of the Bio-Wheel.
